Of birthdays and hair....

So I'm already feeling like this might be a longish sort of post, so I'm putting the best part first...a nifty little hair trick I stumbled upon...you need to try this one out...foolproof. Seriously. This fool tried it.

So this is by far the easiest way to get beachy-waves in your hair...no curling iron needed.
All you need is a stretchy headband. I found it here on Meredith's blog first, and I just had to share.

The girl's hair in the video is already kind of wavy and thick, and mine is super thin and long and it still worked and I loved it. (this video is kind of long, but the gist of it is...you put a stretchy headband on around your forehead, hippy style. Then you just wrap small strips of hair around and under it.)

My version, (on the right) from a friend's birthday party....
You may think I'm playing fast and loose with the term "beachy waves" here, but the fact that my hair was anything other than stick straight for more than 2 minutes without having to spray the frickity-frack out of it with hairspray is a miracle.
A miracle I tell you.
So rest assured it will probably turn out even better on your own pretty head.

*Tips: for even curlier waves, take a shower, wait till hair is 80-90% dry, wrap it and then sleep on it.
I rushed the process because I have the patience of a flea, and only let it dry for a couple of hours. And it was still a nice improvement from my usual method of throwing it up in a ponytail and picking out the stray cheerios. {I have a baby. That will be my excuse until she's 14}

We also celebrated Charlotte's 3rd Birthday...

{you like my 1974 school cafeteria chairs? yes you do.}

My sweet Charlotte Jane. You're the one who made me a mom.
And your sweet baby smell is fading.
Replaced with shocking displays of foot-stomping sass
I want you to grow up and stay small all at the same time and it hurts my heart a little.

And not to be outdone,
Stroodle Noodle turned 8 months old, got her first tooth and started to crawl...

we're all a little tired

Guest Room Design Board...

Our house has the master bedroom and bathroom on the bottom floor, and the other bedrooms are upstairs.
We've been staying in one of the rooms up there to be closer to the girls, especially since Juliette occasionally still  gets up in the night.

But she's 8 months now {sniffs} and my husband is bugging me to move back downstairs so we can enjoy the bigger bathroom and have easier access to all of our clothes, since they're down there in the master closet.

Since I knew we would be making the switch eventually, we just never got motivated to really decorate or paint the room we've been in. But my sister is coming to stay with us for a good part of the summer and I really want to turn it back into a proper guest room.

Here's what I'm thinking so far...

Since a lot of my house is already decorated in similar colors, I'll probably be shopping around my own home and stealing things from other rooms until I can save up money for the things I don't have, like the bench and light fixture.

What do you think?  Any paint color suggestions??

A Canvas wish list...

Good lord, does Shabby Apple actually sell any of their dresses? Every time I open my eyeballs someone is having a give-a-way on their blog for one of them. {No hate, Shabby Apple. I heart your clothes. your publicity person is just a busy beaver, that's all}

Anyway.

This is actually about how much I've been digging the newest endeavor of the old classic, Land's End...their Canvas line. Katie from Bower Power has written about some of the cute things she's gotten, and I decided to check it out.

I know. Land's End makes you think about moose, and flannel, and fuzzy slippers. Maybe just me?

But they've attempted a more modern look with Canvas, and there are several things I honestly would love to add to my summer wardrobe. {I've chosen to say "wardrobe", instead of "things I'd like to add to the pile of clothes in my closet that may or not get hung up someday" in an attempt to fool you about the level of both class and cleanliness in this establishment)

The most ridiculously marvelous little nook ever...A "little house" tour

This little tour is the cutest thing I've seen a long time. I am pining for something like it soooo badly. And not even for my girls. for ME.

Take a look at what  Birdie Blue created for her four lucky daughters...

an amaaazing little get away

with an amaaazing little loft

Do you die from the cuteness? Are you laying there, slain from the adorableness of it all?
Don't you wish you had someplace like this to escape to?
love it.

Head over to her wonderful blog to check out all the details

The Week in review...

I haven't posted in a week....eeep.
Lots of living has been done, and I just haven't made the time to write about it.
We had a small birthday party for Charlotte...the big 3.

She's just a grown, sassy woman of the world now.
please excuse Juliette's extra flexy toes in the foreground.

Since my mom was in town for the party, we took full advantage...hightailing it to Hilton Head Island for two days and left her to spoil the girls rotten.

Sea Pines is an enclosed community on the south end of the Island and it is my New. Favorite.
Quiet, beautiful, serene...
Full of gorgeous old oaks and swaying moss, random swings and benches tucked under the branches, precious little pastry shops, and this time of year...very few children and oodles of old retired couples taking up all the rocking chairs. Perfect

And they have stables. with horses.
And a petting zoo.
I was more excited than the 4 year olds. As you will see from the 103233 pictures I will share with you later. I kept screeching at my husband "Did you get it!?? Did you get me and the donkey?!!"
We have maybe 2 pictures of us together on the trip. A quick glance through all the photos makes it appear we spent 30 seconds at a beach, 30 seconds by some harbor, and approximately one month mucking around a stable full of livestock, petting chickens.

It's always hard for me to come back to real life though. That collision of quiet car rides and comfortable silences into tantrums and diaper changes.
I missed the girls though, and couldn't wait to get back to see them. We even left a few hours earlier than planned because I wanted to come back and get my fill of gangly toddler arms and legs and rolly-polly baby thighs. I had this vision of Charlotte running to me, arms wide, ready for a hug after all the time apart.

Nothing of the kind. Grandma had gotten her 10 new dresses, new shoes, and we could have taken a 30 day cruise around the world for all she cared.

Be back later with party details and pictures of goat asses and chickens. Take deep breaths if the excitement overwhelms you.
