blowing off the dust

Bit of a writing lull lately.
Entire seasons have gone by. Kardashians have gotten divorced. Housewives of B.H. have surely had more bouts with botox. I just keep going down the rabbit hole...finding a new amazing blog, which leads me to another great blog, which leads me to another, which leads me to piles of clean laundry not put away and children interrupting my browsing to demand things like food, water, and clean diapers. geez. needy.

So, to recap...there's too much to recap. Moving onward and upward.

We're finally painting all the upstairs rooms, one at a time. We've been in this house for 3 years now, and I swore I wasn't going to be one of those people who moves in and says "we're going to paint everything really soon!" and then lives with half-finished walls and color sample squares up for the rest of their lives. But then life happened and I am one of those people. Sigh.

The office is done. check.
Our bedroom is half done. half check. And the way I left off makes it look like a giant phallus of gray-blue paint is sprouting up from the ground towards the ceiling. Not on purpose. It's haunting my dreams and I will finish tomorrow.

We also finally put together a plan for the little powder room. Here it is, coming at you. bam.
powder room-our house I'm pretty much obsessed with the floors. And I'm having a bit of a gold moment.
I just really like how the warmth of the gold mirror and frames
play off the cooler gray and white of everything else.
I think every room in a home should have something sentimental in it.
Something that makes it yours.
So inside the antique frames are paintings done by Wes' grandmother.

Good Chat. We'll talk again soon.

This and That...

I really want to paint our front door. Our is boring black, and we have a pretty strict h.o.a. code. Doubtful any of these will fly. But look at all the pretty...

Crushing so hard on a yellow and gray scheme for the guest bedroom. I think every room in our house, has been every other room in the house at some point. The guestroom turned into our room which turned into the playroom and then back to our room and now back to the guest room. It's an exhausting, indecisive, half-finished sort of life we lead here people.

When people dent their pillows it pains me. Don't know why. It just bothers.
(love these pillows though)

What design element bothers you?
Have a pretty painted door? (sad face. jealous.)

keep on keepin' on

I really should have had better time management in school. Every time I have a project or a trip coming up, I start having flashbacks of that waiting-till-the-last-second feeling, even if everything is going smoothly and I do actually have plenty of time to complete what needs to get done. And then I get all antsy and frazzled and it manifests itself in irrational ways...like when I tried to sort out my un-matched sock basket today and when it wasn't working I threw it down and yelled "Where the hell are all the other socks!! Who can LIVE like this!!?? To myself. In the closet. And then I threw them all out. Straight to the trashcan. It's summer. Who needs socks. We are now a sandals-only family. If it was good enough for Him, it's good enough for us.

I'm going to get some alone time today while Wes watches the girls. I have to go to a craft store to get some supplies for the dessert and candy table I'm decorating at a wedding this weekend. And then I'll do what I do every time I get to go out by myself...drive around giddy with freedom and wondering what I'll do with all this time, and deciding where to go until my time has run out and all I've really done is get a diet coke and waste gas. But a diet coke enjoyed with an empty backseat is the sweetest of all ;)

Organization Motivation

Summer is a great time for simplifying and dealing with less!

Less busy schedules (hopefully)....less clothes (definitely)...and maybe, just maybe, less stress from messy spaces.

So, as I said here yesterday, I'm going to take a couple days and talk about ways to get and stay organized...especially with kids. But before we can even get that far, you have to figure out what's going to make you actually want to do it! That's truly the hardest part.

Let's get some motivation- what will get you at least a little pumped up to clean and organize?
Here are some things that do it for me...

One, it's knowing that taking a few seconds to wipe off the counters, or doing a quick vacuum, makes me feel like someone could pop in for a visit unexpectedly and I'll feel ok about how the house looks.
I know my friends and family will love me regardless, and not think any less of me if my house is a hot mess when they come over. But I do it for me. I enjoy having company, and I'm proud to show off my home.

{And please understand this pride has nothing to do with the size, age, or type of home you have! When we first got married we lived in a 379 sq foot studio condo in Greenwich, Connecticut. T-I-N-Y. Insanely tiny. Like the if you get in a fight someone had to leave the condo and go ride the elevator up and down to cool off because there's no place else to go, kind of tiny! And I was just as proud to decorate it and show it off as I am our 4 bedroom home today).

Two- I also feel like keeping a tidy home is a very small way of expressing my thankfulness that God has always blessed us with a roof over our heads. And I want to use that blessing to provide a relaxing, clean, place for friends and family that come to stay or visit.

Three-Another thing that motivates me is probably not my husband's favorite {sorry minks!}
Getting something new or changing something up decorating-wise in my house is enough to push me to want to clean the laundry up off the floor, or mop the bathrooms. If I just bought a cute new set of rugs for my bathroom, I don't want to just throw them on the dirty floor and be done with it. Having something pretty in  my bathroom  makes me want to make the whole room look better to go along with it. It doesn't have to be something expensive...even just having a vase of fresh flowers to put on my dining room table makes me want to clean off the clutter and wipe it down.

Four-soaking up inspiration from pictures of beautiful, well-planned spaces. I could do this all day. As long as you don't let staring at pictures of amazing homes get you discouraged or jealous! Big or Small, owned or rented, your home is wonderful because it's filled with wonderful people. And it's not about magazine perfection...it's about having a comfortable, lived-in, loved-in, space
that you really want to come home to.

I'll be back tomorrow with some really easy baby-steps towards giving your home a fresh, clean start to summer :)

Fun Fridge Function- say it faaast

My sister-in-law is super creative, and a fellow lover of anytime pretty and organized combine!

Cutting down on excess packaging, storing frequently used items where your eye wanders to first, and keeping things in super cute (plus re-usuable & eco-friendly!) glass and plastic containers has given her fridge a fresh new look!

Check it out here for all the details
